A Dyeing Day

I asked on SAQA, during the week, if my screen printed poppies would act as a resist for dyeing. The general consensus was that it would be, but to do a test run! Well, that is what I did yesterday. I had some dyes that were a bit old, I mixed up some fresh ones as well and I just went for it!

The yellow was one of the fresh dyes.  Now I know how long I shouldn't keep left overs.

I really like the way the poppies seem to float on the back ground.

I soaked the screen prints in Soda Ash for about 30 mins then put them into snap lock bags, poured in some dye and zipped the bags shut.  I left them for about 2 hours and then zapped them gently in the microwave (medium power for 2 mins).

Next time I'll use all fresh dyes!

While I had the dyes out I tried something that I've been getting ready to do for months.  Over the past few months I've been winding cotton, perl cotton, sashiko cotton and silk into skiens, ready for dyeing.

The process worked ready well!  Aren't they the yummiest colours! I have a one metre length of dyed fabric to match (dyed under the skeins)

They still look good. Have you ever thought of freezing left over dyes?

I love the effect of the overdyed fabric on your screen print. It really make your prints sing.

Fantastic Sally. The old dyes have still worked well with the fresh ones. Gorgeous colours in the threads.
