A productive weekend

My goodness - I've just uploaded these photos and they all look very drab!

That wasn't what I was going to say to start this post but it is true!  In real life they do have a bit more sparkle.

I finished the quilt I started on Friday with 1 1/2 hands.  It is amazing how easy it is to machine quilt with a damaged heal of left hand - it made me use my fingers a lot more and the quilt was much easier to control.  That might break "the Rules" but I don't care - worked for me.

These little blackbirds seem to have a mind of their own.  In the garden they are very cheeky and my friend Chris would shoot them all if she could - they can be very distructive!

This is a close up of the print from the wood block, blackbird I cut.  I have decided that wood block are easier to carve than lino - I like that little bit of resistance that the wood gives.

It really isn't a good photo - looks wonky but it really isn't!

I belong to a group of art quiters from Australia  and New Zealand.
This year's challenge is to make 6, 12 x 12 journal quilts based on 6 different countries (Australia not included).  I decided I need to have a theme.  Petroglyphs, for some obscure reason, jumped at me.  I have learnt so much and only produced two little quilts.  This one I made on Sunday - Easter Island has alway fascinated me - so mystical and strange and the bird me are so cute!

I'm also a member of SAQA and every year they hold a huge auction.  This little quilt (10.5" x 10.5") is my contribution this year.  Koi is a lino print that I have hand painted.  In real life he sparkle!
Hopefully next weekend will be a bit more colourful!

I like all of them, Sally, but especially the blackbirds. Particularly like the way you have used the poppy heads as a backdrop. :)

Not drab at all Sally. You should use the expression subtle. I certainly like the pieces. Keep Chris away from that gun. Our blackbirds cause no damage and provide early warnings to the other birds in case of cats, sparrow hawks and any other perceived dangers. They are hugely entertaining. Your petroglyph bird piece is lovely as is the fish for the SAQA auction.

I like all these pieces, Sally, and agree with Maggi. The petroglyph project sounds fascinating. (Did you receive my email on that?)

Ah, but they oust absolutely all of the native birds here AND they toss all the mulch and manures all over the lawn, even over the dolerite boulder rock walls I built to try to contain their activities!! Aaaaaaaaaaargh!!I know their song is pretty, but......... Cx

Blackbirds are definitely my favourite. I think the colour contrast of birds o background sets them out beautifully.
Your Koi also looks good. Are the coloured sewing lines quilting or design?
