Friday Flaunt - Trying something new

And I didn't think I would have a flaunt this week because I was just working away at my Feathers and Cicad quilt!  It is amazing what can happen in a few hours!  All started by.........

I received a beautiful parcel in the mail this morning. I opened it up and there was the most beautiful little quilt! It's title is "In search of Demeter". Dijanne Cevaal created it - I'll post a picture tomorrow - oops - I left it at work! I had to find out who Demeter is. Well now I know - she is Earth Mother! The Romans called her Ceres.

A friend of mine and I found a picture of a relief sculpture of her and my friend (Shirley), challenged me to do something with it!

Well I have. This is the first attempt - she is not pretty but I have learnt a lot from playing!

I started with some horrible pink fabric!  I mean really pink!  I toned it down with a strong tea wash!  It was still pink but not as bad.

Here is a close up - I've got to re-do the binding - my sewing machine decided she didn't feel like making a nice zigzag stitch tonight!  Well it really could be that I was impatient!  And her nose and eye have a few issues.

I have machine quilted all her outline and most of the detail and then painted the rest.  Like I said - I've learnt a lot - what to do and what not to do!

I might make her again one day and try not to make the same mistakes.

She is 18cm x 20 cm

WOW! Sally, I ..... you ...... mmmmm .... hey, you have left me speechless, you Brilliant Quilt Artist! I just know that everybody will agree with that! I absolutely love what you have done with Earth Mother. Her hair and the wheat arrangement in her hair is brilliant. Having seen the original article I must say that it looks even better holding it in your hands as the 3D effect you get is unbelievable.

Girl, now my challenge is, if I find more Roman goddesses, how about a Roman-style quilt? I now know that you do not back down from a challenge. Out to you now, Young Lady!

You are my inspiration!

I made an error - it is not Roman but Greek goddesses!

Sorry!

What an easy way of changing a fabric to a usable colour...tea dyeing. Your/Her hair and wheat are pretty clever.
